I'm not sure if people are reading this, but in any case, I want to let you know that I am taking care of the chickens this week (24th--30th). I've also been leaving the chicken door closed on days that are below 20 degrees. The chickens aren't too keen about going out much when it's that cold, and it keeps the inside of the coop warmer. Once we get a curtain, we can leave the door open except on super cold days. I got three little eggs today--in the nest boxes!!
Nan
Hi all! I have finally made to our blog! Nan, in case you have been wondering I have been the one opening the chicken door later in the days for the past few. The hens have been coming outside and hanging out on the roost and in what little sun they find. I am happy to knock that off, if it is annoying or confusing since it isn't out turn this week. That is so cool you found multiple eggs!!! We got a double yolker the other day. Seemed like good luck!
ReplyDeleteI am working on the curtain today. It shouldn't take too long. I'll take the week of Dec. 31-Jan. 6.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had an egg yet, but I am so excited to try some. Glad they are continuing to produce eggs.
How are we distributing eggs? If it is your week you get the eggs? At least until they produce larger quantities and there is enough to share?
I hope everyone is having a great holiday.

Hi Lisa,
ReplyDeleteSo far there haven't been that many eggs. I tried knocking on your door a few times to see if you were home so I could give one to you, but I think you were out of town? As far as I know we don't have a firm system in place for egg distribution yet. I think when it is your week you are in luck and can keep all the eggs you find! It'll be great when they are producing enough that we do need to come up with a system.
Can't wait to see your curtain. Thanks for doing that!
Julia,
ReplyDeleteThat's fine to let them out in the afternoon when it's warmer. I'm just worried about the times when it's really cold--like this morning when Darwin opened the door when it was only 10. I talked to him about it today, and showed him the thermometer in the coop that read only 23. I'm surprised the water didn't freeze! But with Lisa's new curtain, we can have the door open more often without the inside of the coop getting so cold.
